Creative Europe re-launched, with more funding than ever
The cultural sector has been one of the main victims of the Covid-19 pandemic, despite having shown great resilience. The European Commission has taken this into account and has increased the budget for the Creative Europe 2022 work programme by almost 100 million euros. The main European initiative that supports the cultural and creative sectors now has a total 385 million euros to allocate to policies which are structured in three strands: Culture, Media and Cross-sectoral.
Culture
The Culture strand, which covers all cultural and creative sectors, except for news and the audiovisual sectors, will focus its efforts in 2022 on boosting the mobility of creators, artists and cultural professionals. A mobility scheme provides funding to individuals to travel abroad to facilitate professional development and to establish international collaborations. As in previous years, literature, the performing arts, music and cultural heritage will also be the focus of various calls for proposals
Media
The Media strand, focused on the audiovisual and cinematographic sectors, also presents novelties this year, since it now funds virtual reality experiences and the development of innovative video games. In addition, the ‘Media 360 degrees’ initiative will address industry forums working with audiovisual companies along the sector’s entire value chain. The marketing of emerging companies will be supported and collaboration between film festivals will also be strengthened.
Cross-sectoral
The aim of this strand is to strengthen collaboration between different creative and cultural sectors to help address common challenges and find innovative solutions. For the first time, funding will be offered to the media sector to promote media freedom, pluralism and media literacy, and also help cope with structural and technological changes.
This strand also includes the Creative Innovation Lab, which will fund joint innovation projects involving several creative sectors.
Diversity and sustainability
Aligned with the strategic objectives of the European Union 2021-2027, Creative Europe prioritises diversity and sustainability strategies in its policies. During these seven years, the programme will manage a budget of €2.4 billion to fund a multitude of creative projects.
