EIC Transition, mature technologies on their way to market

In this article we tell you about the peculiarities of the EIC Transition, the programme that drives the most disruptive technologies towards the market

Each stage of development of an innovative project can receive a boost from the European Innovation Council (EIC), the body responsible for scaling the most disruptive technologies in the EU. The EIC is based on three pillars: EIC Pathfinder, with financial support for totally disruptive and visionary ideas at an early stage of development; EIC Accelerator, which helps more developed deep tech initiatives to find external investors for the expansion and commercialisation of their innovation, and finally EIC Transition, the intermediate step between the two.

In this article we will explain how one of these three pillars, EIC Transition, works.

Projects funded by EIC Transition

EIC Transition funds innovation activities that go beyond experimental testing in a laboratory. Proposed activities must include further technological development building on results in a previous project and follow user-centred methodologies to increase the chances of future success of the innovation.
For the 2023 edition it has a budget of 128 million euros to fund projects with:

· a technology that demonstrates its effectiveness for the intended application (moving from a TRL 4 to a TRL technology readiness level of 5 or 6).

· a business model, its initial validation and a business plan for its development to market.
Each project can receive a grant of up to €2.5 million, which is a significant financial boost.

The proposals

There are two ways to apply for this funding:

· EIC Transition Open, which has no pre-defined thematic priorities and is open to proposals in any field of science, technology or application.

· EIC Transition Challenges, in pre-defined thematic areas of emerging and strategic technologies.

This programme is restricted to results-based proposals generated by eligible EIC Pathfinder projects; European Research Council projects; EDF and projects funded by H2020 or Horizon Europe (only for EIC Transition Challenges).
