H2020: Germany in the TOP of countries receiving the most funds, and the United Kingdom in 2nd place

With only a few days to go before the end of the 2014-2020 period, and with the EU’s R&D&I programme, Horizon 2020 (H2020), we at Kaila are taking stock of the results of the framework programme.

In the absence of the latest data, Germany has consolidated its position as the leading country in terms of returns with 8.472.360.595€; followed by the United Kingdom, which has received 17% fewer returns. This figure is particularly relevant due to the imminent application of the Brexit on 31 January 2020.

The third position, France which has received a return almost 26% less. And Spain reaches a historic 4th place with a return of 5.173.225.340 M€; surpassing the figures reached in the 7th Framework Programme, both in position and return.

This table shows the final ranking at the end of the H2020:

What do we know about Horizon Europe?

After H2020, it is the turn of Horizon Europe, the largest transnational programme to support research and innovation. The new EU research and innovation programme; which, following the agreement reached by the European Parliament and the Council, we know will have a budget of 5.5 billion for the period 2021-2027, 30% more than the current H2020 framework programme.

Horizon Europe will be built on three pillars to achieve the goal of a green, healthy, and resilient Europe. And it will support thematic clusters such as “Climate, Energy and Mobility” and “Digital World, Industry and Space“; the “Culture, Creativity and Inclusive Society” cluster which will be strengthened; and the “Health” cluster which is particularly relevant at this time due to the COVID 19.

Next steps

The European Parliament and the Council must approve the agreement reached, in view of the start of the programme, which has no specific date yet but will be as soon as possible in 2021.
